Lawmakers Discuss Aberdeen Harbour Expansion

Hong Kong Legislative Councillors on Wednesday began discussing plans to expand the Aberdeen South Typhoon Shelter, providing hundreds of new moorings for pleasure craft.

The Public Works Committee Subcommittee of the Legislative Council Finance Committee, which is responsible for scrutinizing and approving public expenditure proposals, invited its members to comment on the government’s plans to expand the sheltered waters in the south of Hong Kong Island. The over $2-billion project would include the construction of two additional breakwaters and an array of shoreline facilities, including a public landing and open space, a pedestrian walkway, “ecoshoreline elements” such as tidal pools, and associated infrastructure.

As well as providing 200 additional moorings spread out over 24 hectares, the plan offers “enhanced synergies” with nearby Ocean Park. It promises to “develop the Southern District into a place full of vibrancy, vigour and velocity for people to work, live, explore new ideas and have fun.” Slated to take around four years, it is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2030.
