Airport Authority Unveils Vision for SKYTOPIA Marina

Hong Kong’s Airport Authority (AAHK) has released a booklet detailing its planning for its SKYTOPIA marina development, which will offer hundreds of new berths for pleasure craft — including megayachts up to 120 metres long — connected to the city’s airport.

AAHK opened international consultations for SKYTOPIA in late April, welcoming expressions of interest from potential investors and industry partners worldwide. International firms have already signalled enthusiasm in smaller marina projects springing up in Hong Kong, as the government has pledged to support the growing “yacht economy”.

According to the newly released booklet, SKYTOPIA will boast “seamless yacht-to-flight and flight-to-waterfront experiences [that] unlock a new paradigm of air-ocean tourism, positioning Hong Kong as Asia’s gateway and leading yacht club.”

Despite the focus on “ultra-wealthy individuals”, Designing Hong Kong CEO Paul Zimmerman has cautioned that the development must also “include facilities within the financial reach of the common man, including the Lantau communities that now store boats of all sorts along the shore.” Zimmerman has called for setting aside “private moorings” offered by the government for lower-income residents and earmarking land with sea access for water sports clubs to establish storage and recreational facilities.
