LegCo Subcommittee Approves Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter Expansion

The Legislative Council's Public Works Subcommittee has approved expansion works for the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, with the project costing the government over HK$2 billion.

Under the current expansion plan, the typhoon shelter will be expanded by 24 hectares to meet the increasing demand for berths. Another two breakwaters and wave protection walls will be constructed to address harsh weather conditions. The infrastructure upgrade also aims to provide a public disembarkation point and leisure facilities.

Authorities plan to complete the project within 4.5 years.

“The yachting economy should not be limited to berths alone,” said Permanent Secretary for Development (Planning and Lands) Doris Ho Pui-ling (何珮玲). “It requires onshore support like clubs, maintenance facilities, and catering. We want to develop this as an integrated district, featuring residential properties and facilities offering onshore catering [and] creating synergies with Ocean Park.”

Legislator Ray Wong Wing-wai, representing the First Industrial Functional Constituency, notes that current plans accommodate only superyachts up to 50 metres long, questioning whether the government planned to make space for megayachts and gigayachts. Ho explained that plans for the SKYTOPIA marina near Hong Kong International Airport will accommodate vessels up to 100 meters long.

The plan is now scheduled for further review by the Legislative Council Finance Committee.
